Does anyone know if one is still able to get an upgrade by asking at the airport? If so, does anyone have any good tips of how to get one? I am flying KLM/Northwest airlines from the UK via Amsterdam and Memphis (I like to go the scenic routes!) There are nine of us travelling over for my 50th Birthday bash so it would be just the icing on the cake (pardon the pun) if some of us could get upgraded!
Any tips will be much appreicated.
Flight Upgrades??I take it you mean free upgrades. If you%26#39;re happy to pay and there%26#39;s seats available just ask with credit card at the ready.

I hear the ';$20 Trick';, works VERY well with the Stewardesses on the plane.
Free upgrades dont happen that often. If the plane is full and they need to upgrade some pasengers to make room for others its possible but dont hold your breath.....Firstly they never upgrade kids only adults.. Then is normally the frequent flyers and single business men/women first.. As seat allocations are always made up well in advance of the flight I also guess they would not split up a group booking either.

The only tip I could give you is to dress to impress. Some say helps so dont turn up in an England football shirt..

Most of the people are correct, a free upgrade to first class doesn%26#39;t happen often, even if they have empty seats. The few times I have been upgraded it was basically for being polite at check in and the clerk just changed my seat assignment without even telling me. I%26#39;d guess being well groomed also helps.
The one time I did ask, for my honeymoon, I was shot down VERY quickly and VERY rudely. I%26#39;ll never just ask again.
I would never ask for a free upgrade! You can%26#39;t go to the gas station and bribe the guy for upgraded gas! If you want the upgrade pay for it.
If it%26#39;s offered Great! but if not, I wouldn%26#39;t ask.
As everyone has indicated, free upgrades are really difficult to get if you are not using a silver or above ff card. I have been offered first class upgrade on Continental when paying a full coach fare (nothing less than the full price) but that is about it unless I want to use my fff miles. Frquent flyers, airline personnel, etc. usually get those first class seats when they are available.

Usually flights to Vegas, in The States anyway, are booked or overbooked. With 9 of you travelling, I wouldn%26#39;t count on it. Happy Birthday anyway....
