Same as getting an upgrade at a hotel. If you ask nicely (and - important - are dressed smartly) you may get very lucky.

A lot of scheduled flights are overbooked by airlines who attempt to guess the number of flexibly ticketed passengers that won%26#39;t show up. If coach is full and there%26#39;s seats free in a higher class they%26#39;ll move people into them rather than having to bump them.

Correct. I have gotten this twice going to Vegas. Simply arrive early and ask nicely. I usually mention that I have a bad back (which I do). I don%26#39;t harp on it, but mention it. If they do have a seat it is up to the check in guy to decide who gets it.
