Message for Onetogo - Review of the Gold Spike

Hi Onetogo,

sorry.... I did not know that my thread was still going on.

I posted my ';TR'; at the reviews for the Gold Spike...

Here it is:

After reading the responses to my thread about being safe at the Gold Spike I was worried at first. Then I realized that mostly women encouraged me that I would be fine.

So I arrived on a Sunday at about 4.p.m.. Found parking at once in one of the two parking lots. Well lit plus security - what do you want more?

Then you pass through the tiny but peaceful casino (there were always security guys who kind of had an eye on everybody and everything and were helpful with door opening and directions) to the check-in counter, there it took a long 20 minutes because they were changing shifts.

I was holding my breath during the elevator ride, whow what a smell. I expected the worst with the room.

But the room was nice, clean (I had a non-smoker room) with enough place, towels, soap and shampoo! TV, phone and alarmclock was existing as well. It was quiet at night, aircon worked well and I was happy about the good and quick parking and walking to Freemont Street (2 minutes).

I had paid about US$ 15 for a night and it was very very very good value.

The hotel is excellent for the money, if you don麓t need a pool or if you don麓t want to impress your boyfriend or girlfriend. I felt safe at any time. And safed a lot of money.

There are a lot of Motels further down on Freemont Street - these can麓t be recommended at all - you can see from the outside that these place are not safe.

And: a word about the visitors/locals in the casino - yes there are ';interesting'; and strange people gambling there, but they have not had very much luck or money in their life - and some of them are old and not in a good shape - but I cannot agree with other visitors who gave a bad review here (expecially about the locals). I had not problem at all in the casino or walking around in the streets nor did I have any bad impression of the gamblers in the Gold Spike - let them just do what they want to do.

MBAKA.

I agree with you 100%!! Great post!! If you want a safe clean room Goldspike is fine. People who talk it down probably never stayed there.

Some people are to full of themselves and try to impress others by telling them that they stayed at a mega resort that costed them alot more.

Good post and advice. I%26#39;d only add that many of the other hotels directly on Fremont are also great bargains for budget travelers, including Fitzgerald, Las Vegas Club, California, Fremont, and the Plaza.

My guess is that UK/EU visitors who are accustomed to budget B%26amp;B travel on their side of the pond would find the Spike perfectly adequate for their needs and probably a surprising upgrade over $15-a-night lodgings (if they can even be found) in UK/EU cities.

Sorry, $15 sounds more like an hourly rate at most ';no-tell motels';. Did you stick to the bedspread when you got up? Give me any other hotel except El Cortez or the Spike. Yuk. I got the Fitz for about $45.00 a night last Feb.

Thank you for posting. I find that there are 2 types of people when it comes to the Gold Spike:

Those who have actually stayed at the Gold Spike, like yourself, myself and the Mailman. I posted the pictures of room 207 to prove it

Those who never stayed there, true they may have been spooked by the funky casino but they never saw a hotel room and now set themselves up as experts on the place.

It is what it is, not expensive and not fancy but not bad for the money. Personally, I would stay there again but it would not be my first choice since I like a pool and safe deposit box..

I need a favor. i am looking to stay at a hotel called the Shipwreck in Fort Myers Beach, Florida USA but the only review is in German which I do not understand but here it is.

Waren im Juli 2006 im Hotel gewesen und freudig 眉berrascht, saubere Zimmer und sch枚ne Terrasse. Leider ging die Klimanalage nur in einem Zimmer.

Anmeldung war freundlich und korrekt

M.Schindler Frankfurt

Is this place OK?

Hi chit

The gent is saying that he had a fine room with a beautiful terrace and the staff are friendly and professional.

That%26#39;s a rough translation but it appears that it%26#39;s a good hotel.

Margaret

What a world. i ask about a hotel in Florida on the Las Vegas Forum because the only review is in German and I get a rough translation from Scotland. We are truly an international community here at TA.

So my question to FMB forum was are we talking, as advertised, a Plain Jane hotel with older furniture and some worn carpet but still basically functional or a real Roach Motel with leaky pipes, lizards and bugs (yes, I know the lizards are there to eat the bugs) and security issues?

If we do end up there, I plan to do a full review, good or bad but as complete as those I have done in Las Vegas.

I just want a decent place to stay that is not fancy but neither is it a transient hotel. Some of the reviews on TA of local hotels have me wondering. Had the reviews of this place been the same as say the Lani Kai Island Resort Hotel, give those reviews a look at the site below, I would just give it a quick pass and move on but the lack of information on Shipwreck makes me very curious. With luck it will even exceed the high standards set by the Gold Spike.

A little off the beaten track for LV but still travel related. Thanks again.

Hi Mbaka,

Thank you for your response regarding the Gold Spike. You sound like a ';well-grounded'; person who does not despise the less fortunate amoung us. I do, however, value safety and appreciate your remarks. I will be staying Downtown at the Fremont and the Plaza

(comped) in a few weeks and plan to stop at the Gold Spike.

Take a look at the Outrigger on FMB- It%26#39;s been a while , but same price point as Shipwreck and I think a little nicer.

Hi Chitowngambler - the Scottish translation was very good! One sentence was missing:

....the aircon worked in one room only unfortunately....

This place sounds OK.

So have a good trip to Florida!!
