UK exchange rate

Just a quick message to the UK travellers. Leaving tomorrow for LV, booked our holiday money with Travelex at 1.82. Found a better rate of 1.84 on Marks and Spencer, so used Travelex price promise guarantee and got a refund of the difference. Most big companies such as Thomas Cook are only offering 1.8 so make sure you shop around. PS Travelex are offering 1.84 today.

Thanks,

Have never heard of them before so will keep an eye on them in future. Will try to get a price match from Travelex. Their euro price is excellent as well.

I deal with foreign exchange markets a lot through my job. A lot of people who deal in currencies think that the UK拢 will threaten $2 before the end of the year due to UK interest rate hikes and the weakening US economy figures.

Even though the current rates are great, it may pay to wait a while for Brits buying $$$s. But remember, these trends can change overnight and start going the other way.

That was a useful tip, thanks Blagger!

I called Thomas Exchange as I couldn%26#39;t see any way to order online. Apparently you have to transfer money to their account. Too much faffing around so I ordered from M%26amp;S at $1.846.

Credit card companies consistently give better rates than ANY foreign exchange company.

Load your card up before you go and if you are in credit no cash advance fees , plus you get a better interest rate for your cash while you are in credit.

Nationwide credit card gives a very good exchange rate without any loading.

To Preston Traveller. You been reading Martin Lewis website? Just applied for my credit and debit card with Nationwide for that very reason.

Great tip ain%26#39;t it.

I%26#39;ve been telling relatives for years about Nationwide, and my boyfriend switched there last year. I have a different current account but would probably apply to Nationwide if I ever need to move banks, but all my holiday shopping on credit cards goes on that one.

Even with different banks though, I would say that for the US it may not be worth buying too much in cash or travellers cheques. My bank charges 拢1.75 at last look plus some loading for cash withdrawals, but I still get more dollars if I take it out in sensible amounts for small expenditure, buses and tipsetc where I can%26#39;%26#39;t use plastic. It also saves having to work out how much to take, needing to change money back etc. It%26#39;s also useful because I rarely have the kind of amount I would need actually in my bank account at just the right time, eg if I go away on the 8th with a week to payday, I can use what%26#39;s in my account or some overdraft, and then have access to my wages after payday (I usually go to the US for at least 2 weeks).

M%26amp;S still looking like a good price, although the exchange rate took a bit of a hit last week with the airline shenanigans, and now appears to be slowly recovering back towards the 1.91 market rate.
