I%26#39;m planning a trip to Vegas in October and was thinking about checking some other than the inside of casinos all day (leave that for nite time).
We are interested in seeing the GC, but not sure what the best way is or what rim (West Rim or South Rim)?
I%26#39;ve read that the west rim is closer to Vegas (about 2 hour drive vs 4 hours to south?), but the south rim as better tours and views.
Please advise..
Vegas to Grand Canyon
I did this trip last September. We went the longer route to the south rim and really enjoyed it. We did an overnight stay at a hotel just outside of the National Park. Not luxury but clean and convenient. The views were spectacular and I wish we would have had more time there. The drive was not bad at all and well worth it. I thoroughly recommend doing it!
Vegas to Grand Canyon
There is no ';west rim'; of the Grand Canyon. It%26#39;s merely a marketing ploy by the Indian tribe that owns the land in that area. Yes, it%26#39;s a canyon. Yes, you%26#39;ll be impressed by it if you%26#39;ve never seen a canyon. No, it%26#39;s not the same as the North or South Rims of the Grand Canyon.
Drive the extra 2-3 hours, it%26#39;s worth it. And hopefully you can do this as an overnight trip to experience sunset and/or sunrise.
The South Rim is the ';famous'; Grand Canyon you see on TV travel shows. It%26#39;s well worth an overnight trip from LV, especially right on the rim in Grand Canyon Village. Figure on driving 5 hours minimum each way.
We will be in Vegas next April for the first time and have considered tours to both rims and have settled on a Papillon tour to the south rim with an overnight stay called the Grand Canyon Deluxe Overnight Tour. The tour is a flight to the south rim, a coach tour into the national park, overnight at a hotel with breakfast. This is at a cost of $189.00 each. There is an Imax theatre show in with this but we will not be doing this, instead we are adding a 30 minute helicopter flight over the canyon. Hope this helps.
I am taking the Super Deluxe Air trip with Pappillon November 24th to the south rim. I explored several and they only go to the west rim. I%26#39;ll let you know how it goes.
Go to the South Rim, it%26#39;s the Grand Canyon you%26#39;ve seen in pictures and on TV. The drive isn%26#39;t bad really, but staying overnight near the park would be wise.
Also, you might want to consider buying National parks pass if you do drive. The park charges $25 (I think) per vehicle or $50 for the pass. The pass will get you into any other national park for a full year.
you can also stay at a hotel inside the park called el tovar. it%26#39;s about 100 yrs old and a little pricy. but the atmosphere inside is nice and the food is good. walk right outside and your looking over the edge of the canyon. just a thought.
for some reason this hotel does not show up in most hotel websites, including TA.

for some reason this hotel does not show up in most hotel websites, if you search on TA under el tovar hotel it will show up, but if you look under grand canyon hotels it does not. strange.......
now how did i do that? :-O
Or if you are considering an overnight stay at the South Rim, in addition to the accommodation mentioned above, all the in-park places can be booked through www.xanterra.com.
I%26#39;d definitely recommend staying at least one night if you can. It%26#39;s a 5-hour drive each way from Vegas so that%26#39;s a lot of driving in one day for just a short time at the Grand Canyon.
